A year or so ago I picked up a couple of learn to ski and learn to snowboard dvds while browsing in the Park City Dolly’s Bookstore. I first only purchased the Snowboard dvd since I already knew how to ski, but then went back a couple of days later to pick up the skiing version because the snowboard one was so great. I figured the skiing dvd could be helpful too since I may have picked up some bad habits over the years and a refresher course would not hurt, plus the dvd goes beyond basics and covers some advanced techniques too.

The titles of the dvds are Go Snowboard and Go Ski by Neil McNab and Warren Smith, respectively. They are actually guide books that integrate video instruction along with written tips and illustrations. I like it because I can always refer to the book as a quick reminder without having to play the dvd. The back of the book reads, “Instructor, technical guide, and starter kit – all in one groundbreaking package. Integrated live-action DVD demontrates essential techinques – from basic turns to freeriding and aerials (snowboarding dvd) and carving, steeps, moguls, freeskiing and freestyle (skiing dvd).

Both dvds covers the very basic – from equipment, clothing, how to get on and off a lift, stance, etc. to how to make turns, stop (essential!) and more advanced techniques like riding powder, freestyle tricks and freeriding. Both dvds have given me some great tips and have improved my skiing and riding skills. It’s not like I sit down and watch these every time I go to the slopes, but they are nice to have around for review. What has been even better is that when we have visitors who are first-time or beginner skiers or snowboards, we have them watch these as their preliminary skiing and/or snowboarding lesson before their first day at the ski resort. Now don’t get me wrong, these are not meant to replace a regular ski or snowboard lesson, but are a nice, helpful supplement and really nearly any level skier or rider would benefit from watching.

Review of Go Snowboard DVD

Great book, even better Video

“The only snowboard source I’ve found that actually helped me “get” the movements and balance needed to control the board. On the actual snow, I could somewhat reproduce what I had seen in the excellent, well focused video. I’m not a particularly athletic person or fast physical learner, but I feel this book helped me learn faster than I would have otherwise.” -F. Webb

Review of Go Skiing DVD

Highly Recommended!!!

“As a certified ski instructor, I read almost every ski book out there and I have to say this is the best ski book I ever come across. The reason I say this is because 1) It is one of very few ski instructional texts that teaches modern ski technique – this is technique that fully utilizes the latest in ski equipment technology 2) It is very well-written and concise….”(more of the review at Amazon) -Dasnowman NY

So check these dvds out, practice in your living room (I have just learning how to transfer weight for turns) or in your backyard (done that too down the backyard hill) or the local park hill and then when you get to your favorite Park City Ski Resort you’ll be a little more prepared for your real lesson and can get more from your instructors.

If you are a Utah resident you can get a ski or snowboard lesson plus rentals and half day lift tickets from 1-4pm at the Park City Mountain Resort for only $25! This is a promotion provided by the StartNOW program. This is for all first time skiers or riders six years old and up. There are separate adult and children lessons. What is even more awesome is that they limit the group lessons to five participants or less so you get a lot of one on one instruction from the instructor.

Some details of the program:

The StartNOW Program is offered December 4, 2009 to March 28, 2010 (not available December 18-January 3 and February 13-20). Lesson availability is limited.

Your first lesson reservation must be made at least five days in advance.

Participants under 18 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or guardian as a signature is required at time of check-in.

Proof of Utah residency will be required at time of check-in.

StartNOW participants should arrive at Park City Mountain Rentals, located on the lower level of the Legacy Lodge, no later than noon registration and fitting of their equipment.

Awesome Bonus: “BounceBack” extra – They let you come back four more times to the Park City Resort and for only $25 per day you can customize your next four visits by selecting ONE, TWO or ALL THREE of the following:

All-Day Lift Ticket
Pass allows you to proceed directly to the chairlift

All-Day Equipment Rental
Equipment rentals through Park City Mountain Rentals, located in the lower level of Legacy Lodge

Standard or Junior Ski Package: skis/poles/boots

Standard or Junior Snowboard Package: snowboard and boots

Afternoon Lesson

Adult lessons (15 yrs. and older): 1 – 4pm. Meet at the Adult Ski and Snowboarding school area in the main Skiway

Kids Lessons (6 – 14 yrs): 1 – 3 pm. Meet at the Kids Signature Program meeting area in the Kid’s Korral

Just found this deal today via “burtonsnowboard” on Twitter where you can get a free lift ticket and snowboard lesson at The Canyons Ski Resort in Park City with the purchase of any of the following Burton Snowboards…

Qualifying Burton Snowboard Purchases:
Blunt
Blunt Primo
Blunt Wide
Bullet
Chicklet
Chopper
Clash
Custom Smalls
Dom Grom
Feather
Feelgood Smalls
Operator Smalls
Shaun White Smalls
Stigma
The Social
Verdict

What do You Get with Your Free Lift Ticket & Snowboard Lesson Package?

Basically you get a free Learn To Ride lesson package. The Canyons is an official Learn To Ride Center and offers the clinic to first time snowboarders normally for $99. I did this lesson a few years back and thought it was a pretty good deal and the instructors were great. They give you a full day lesson and full day lift ticket on the beginner lift at mid-mountain, just next to the Red Pine Lodge. They also normally give you the full day of equipment rentals with this package, but in this case you already got your Burton Board!

About the Package – Restrictions & What You Get:

This is for first-timers, a beginner lesson, so if you are above that level and buy a qualifying board and do not want the lesson – the deal is transferrable – sweet! Just give it to a friend or family member as a gift and tell them to buy you lunch on the slopes in return!

The full day lesson is 2.5 hours in the morning, break for one hour lunch, then 2.5 hours in the afternoon. This is plenty of time to get the basics down and learn enough to be able to do some turns on your own by the end of the day – if you can last that long!

Must be at least 15 years old for the lesson

Call at a minimum 48 hours in advance of the day you want to take your lesson. This lesson package books up quick and there is no guarantee there will be a spot open on the day you want if you do not call in advance. The Canyons especially recommends advance reservations are made for lessons during their “Premium Periods” which are: 12/19/2009 – 1/2/2010, 1/16/2010 – 1/18/2010, 2/13/2010 – 4/11/2010. If you have to cancel, do it at least more than 48 hours in advance, otherwise fees will be imposed.

So if you are looking to get a new snowboard, consider one of the Burton snowboards listed above and you get a free $99 lesson and lift ticket deal thrown in. Even if you do not get one of the Burton boards, you still should consider getting the Learn To Ride lesson and lift ticket package at The Canyons because it is a great deal, especially if you are a beginner.

More about the Go Snowboarding Free Lift Ticket and Lesson – there are 18 other resorts in the U.S. you can choose to take your lesson at besides The Canyons, they are all listed at the Burton site.

And here’s the Learn To Ride Snowboard Lesson & Lift Ticket Package at The Canyons with all the details about the lesson and how to make reservations.
