A chill is in the air, winter is just around the corner and Park City Ski Resorts will be opening soon. Park City Mountain Resort, already with snow making machines turned on, will be the first to open on November 19th, then The Canyons Resort on November 25th with Deer Valley always last (nothing wrong with that ) on December 3rd. There’s has been talk of an above normal snowfall ski season with La Niña in the works for this winter, an even better reason for getting your ski passes. All three resorts offer various kinds of passes, from full season, mid-week to multi-packs of 5 or 10-day tickets and even better deals for locals.

Park City Mountain Resort has been voted #1 Family Vacation 2012 by Ski Magazine. It is 3,300 acres, spread over eight peaks and nine bowls with 114 trails, one Superpipe and three terrain parks. Park City Resort is conveniently located near downtown close to restaurants and shopping with a Town Lift right near Main Street so you can hop off the lift, get a bite to eat in town or shop for a warmer pair of gloves, then hop back on the lift to the slopes. The Canyons Resort is one of the five largest ski and snowboard resorts in the United States. It is 4,000 acres, spread across nine peaks and five bowls with 182 trails, 6 natural half pipes and one terrain park. If variety is what you desire, They Canyons won’t disappoint. Deer Valley Resort has been rated by Ski Magazine readers as the #1 ski resort in North America for the past consecutive five years. It is 2,026 acres spread across six peaks and six bowls with 100 trails. Deer Valley is where you go to get pampered – on and off the slopes. But no snowboards allowed here, sorry . The Canyons Resort Season Pass Discounts Ends October 15th

The Canyons Resort season pass discounts ends October 15th, this Friday, so hurry and purchase and save some cash. New improvements for this season at The Canyons include 300 new acres of terrain, a “Ski-Beach” with firepits, lounge chairs and outdoor food stations, heated lift seats with an overhead bubble cover for weather protection and many other improvements to the mountain base area, terrain and lodging.

This season The Canyons Ski Resort is offering passes with varying degrees of benefits and which is reflected in the price. The basic pass is called the Silver Pass and the upgrade is the Gold Pass. There is also a Canyon Club platinum level membership. The price for the Silver Adult Full Season Pass is $999 until October 15th, $1,299 after the 15th. In comparison, the Gold Adult Full Season Pass is $1,399 until October 15th and $1,699 after the 15th. So you will save $300 if you make your season pass purchase now. There are also discounts for purchasing up until October 15th for most of their other passes, including the 5 and 10-day coupon books.

So what is the difference between the Silver and Gold passes besides the $400 price difference? With the Gold pass compared to the Silver Pass, you get 1 more day lift ticket for friends or family, 2 more complimentary lodging nights, 2 more adult ski or snowboard lessons, 1 more gold level ski or board tune and two lunch entrees at The Cabin vs one appetizer or desert (for Silver Pass holders). Both Silver and Gold Passes include Up To 4 Buddy Passes Per Day For $59 Each, 15% Discount at Canyon Mountain Sports & One Sweet Ride, 15% Discount on Ski & Snowboard Rentals, Unlimited Hot Chocolate, Coffee or Tea, Weekly Winter Mountain Tour and Summer Lift Privileges. So head on over to The Canyons Resort Season Passes before the savings end on October 15th. The Park City Mountain Resort also has a similar pass offering with different levels of benefits. You need to purchase your Park City discount ski pass by the end of today because prices are going up tomorrow for Park City Mountain Resort and The Canyons Resort ski passes. You can wait until October 31st for purchasing Deer Valley Resort passes before their prices go up. Locals and non-locals alike can take advantage of the savings – but do it by today!

What Park City Pass did I Get (If You Care)?!

I ended up buying for myself the Adult Mid-Week Ski Pass from The Canyons. The funny thing is, it’s not just a “mid-week” pass. It’s also valid on Sunday’s too! Even though I live here, I have never purchased a season pass. In the past I have purchased a Canyon’s Cherry Picker 5-day pass, a 5-day pass at Park City and a 10-day coupon booklet at Deer Valley. This way during the season, I could ski at each one of the resorts without having to be tied down to only one place.

The draw back, of course, is that my skiing days were limited unless I purchased tickets at full price. Therefore, I always felt like I had to wait for the perfect days to ski to take full advantage of that one day ticket. I also felt like I had to ski or snowboard the entire day. Now with the pass, I can ski for a few hours in the morning or afternoon whenever I have the time to and not feel guilty.

Oh and one big benefit from getting a season pass is all the extra benefits that the 5-day and 10-day passes do not have. There are discounts at the cafes on the slopes, I can buy tickets for friends at a discount – up to four at $59 and one of my favorites – free lift access all summer long for mountain biking, hiking, disc golf or a lift to the Red Pine Lodge Restaurant. I always wanted to do more mountain biking at the ski resorts, so summer 2010 will be my chance! Park City Mountain Resort and Deer Valley Resort also offers similar benefits when buying their season passes as well.

I’ll probably rotate through the resorts and get my pass at Park City Mtn. Resort next year. Don’t know if I’ll ever get a season pass at Deer Valley because I’m learning to snowboard and as you may already know – no snowboarding allowed at the big D. May still get a locals coupon book. You have until October 15th to purchase discount Park City ski passes at Park City Mountain Resort and The Canyons. Deer Valley extends its discount until October 31st. If you have the cash now, I would advise making your purchase ahead of time to take advantage of the discount because unless you can find a good stock pick, you are not going to be able to make up the difference in interest (certainly not in a savings account!) by holding onto your cash and purchasing later. I have listed normal rate daily discount ski ticket rates (PCMR & The Canyons have not posted their yet) to give you an idea of how many days of skiing you need to get in with a pass to start saving money. But it’s not all about saving money, is it?!

The Canyons also offers discounts for youth, students, military, teachers, firefighters, police and Utah locals. I think one of the best deals, if you are on a tight budget but gotta ski, is their Cherry Picker pass. Five passes for $209 (prior to 10/15) which is $41.80 a ticket!

Also are discounts for Senior, Teen, Child, Tot and Hospitality (still searching for what “Hospitality” passes are). They also give a discount if you purchase a second adult season pass at the same time: Adult-2 season pass is available when purchased with a minimum of one Adult-1 or Senior Pass for a spouse or dependent only.
