Park City Resorts are offering some great deals for both ski and snowboard lessons during January which is National Learn to Ski & Snowboard Month. Park City Mountain Resort, The Canyons Resort and Deer Valley all have something going on. I took advantage of The Canyons deal a couple seasons back when I wanted to learn to snowboard. For $50 (now it is only $39!), I got a full day lift ticket, snowboard rental and an all-day lesson. There were only 5 of us in the group which was great because of the extra one-on-one help from the instructor. It was totally worth it and I encourage you to take advantage, especially if you are a first-timer and never been before. Now the time to Do It! Below are the details for each Park City Resort’s discount ski/snowboard lessons. Some deals are for Utah locals only or never-ever skiers and snowboarders.

The Canyons Resort Lessons

Canyons: Lucky 13 Offer…$13 Lift ticket, $13 beginner ski or snowboard lesson (5 hours) and $13 equipment rental. Total package price: $39. Valid January 2-31, 2012. Advance reservations highly recommended. Ages 4 and up – Utah residents only. Proof of Utah residency required. Contact Canyons Ski School at 877-472-6306.

Deer Valley Resort Lessons

Date: January 28, 2012
Program: Ski Utah Learn to Ski Program – Never-ever skiers and locals only (local is anyone with a current Utah driver’s license. Without a Utah driver’s license, a photo ID accompanied by a current Utah property tax form, Utah utility bill or Utah business paycheck stub).
Lesson Time: 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
Maximum: Limited to the first 55 registrants.
Participants: First-time skiers (never-ever skied before).
What is included: Ski lesson, lift ticket, ski rentals (helmet not included) and locker token.
Age: Participants must be 13 years or older. Anyone under 18 years, Parent or Guardian must sign Ski Rental and Acknowledge of Risk Agreement on the day of clinic.
Cost: $39 for the package, per participant ($13 for a lift ticket, $13 for ski rental equipment and $13 for the lesson)
What to bring: Appropriate ski attire (pants and a jacket), gloves, goggles/sunglasses and sunscreen.
Reservations: Must be made prior to January 26, 2012. Reservations can be made by calling 888-754-8477 or 435-645-6648 and mention “Ski Utah Learn to Ski Program.” One lesson per participant.
Check-in Time: 7:45 A.M. – 8:45 A.M.
Check-in Location: Snow Park Lodge, Lower Level Locker area. There will be a Skier Services Representative and a Deer Valley Marketing Department Representative to meet the group and make sure participants know where to go for lesson and lift ticket.
No-show and Cancellation Policy: Must cancel before 5 P.M. two days prior to start of the program; otherwise a No-show/Cancellation fee of $39 per reservation will be charged to the credit card provided. (Anyone checking in after 8:45 is not guaranteed a lesson and will not be able to get a discounted lift ticket or ski rentals)

Park City Mountain Resort Lessons

Registration is now open for Park City Mountain Resort’s StartNOW program. StartNOW is a unique program aimed at teaching Utah residents (ages 6 and up) how to ski or snowboard. StartNOW provides five sessions of instruction for first-time ski and snowboard students and includes lift access, equipment rentals and lessons for just $199 – or less than $40 per session.

StartNOW reservations are available through the Park City Mountain Resort call center at (800) 545-8112 seven days a week from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Blackout dates do apply. More information is available at StartNOW.

So make your reservations now and sign up for a lesson so you can learn to ski or snowboard and enjoy the rest of the skiing and riding season! I know there hasn’t been a lot of snowfall here in Park City lately, or for most of Utah, but these resorts have state-of-the-art snowmaking equipment and all the beginner runs are nicely groomed and ready for you to learn. And don’t forget, some of our biggest snowfall days come in spring, so learn now to enjoy the powder runs later!

There are lots of general winter season activities as well as festive events taking place in Park City, Utah during the month of December. Below are a few of the highlights from the town and each of the three Park City ski resorts: Park City Mountain Resort, The Canyons Resort and Deer Valley Resort. If you have kids, be sure to take advantage of all the free Santa events with complimentary free hot cocoa, cider, cookies and more. If you are a ski bum, do the same. I’ll see you there!

Park City Mountain Resort Events

December 15-18th: Eric Hays Memorial Slalom and Giant Slalom: USSA Sanctioned Alpine Open Giant Slalom and Slalom on the Payday Run

December 24th: Annual Torchlight Parade: Enjoy some free hot chocolate, cookies and then when it gets dark, watch the lighted parade down the mountain led by Santa.

The Canyons Resort

December 17th: Santa Skis Free Day: First 50 full-costume Santas get to ski or ride for free. Don’t try showing up with just a Santa hat or beard because it aint gonna cut it. All Santa or bust!

December 31st: New Years Eve Celebration: Free event on the Ski Beach with DJ and Fireworks.

Deer Valley Resort

December 30th: Deer Valley Torchlight Parade: Begins at 6pm or dusk on Big Stick run on Bald Eagle Mountain. Free hot cider and cookies.

Park City Events

December 14th: A Park City Holiday: 5:30-7:30pm Free cookies, hot chocolate, ice skating, face painting, performances and more at the Park City Ice Arena

December 19th: Park City Nutcracker: 5 & 7:30pm shows at Eccles Center. General Admission: $15 Adults, $10 Children

Park City, The Canyons and Deer Valley Resort Opening Dates

A chill is in the air, winter is just around the corner and Park City Ski Resorts will be opening soon. Park City Mountain Resort, already with snow making machines turned on, will be the first to open on November 19th, then The Canyons Resort on November 25th with Deer Valley always last (nothing wrong with that ) on December 3rd. There’s has been talk of an above normal snowfall ski season with La Niña in the works for this winter, an even better reason for getting your ski passes. All three resorts offer various kinds of passes, from full season, mid-week to multi-packs of 5 or 10-day tickets and even better deals for locals.

Park City Mountain Resort has been voted #1 Family Vacation 2012 by Ski Magazine. It is 3,300 acres, spread over eight peaks and nine bowls with 114 trails, one Superpipe and three terrain parks. Park City Resort is conveniently located near downtown close to restaurants and shopping with a Town Lift right near Main Street so you can hop off the lift, get a bite to eat in town or shop for a warmer pair of gloves, then hop back on the lift to the slopes. The Canyons Resort is one of the five largest ski and snowboard resorts in the United States. It is 4,000 acres, spread across nine peaks and five bowls with 182 trails, 6 natural half pipes and one terrain park. If variety is what you desire, They Canyons won’t disappoint. Deer Valley Resort has been rated by Ski Magazine readers as the #1 ski resort in North America for the past consecutive five years. It is 2,026 acres spread across six peaks and six bowls with 100 trails. Deer Valley is where you go to get pampered – on and off the slopes. But no snowboards allowed here, sorry . Park City Summer Activities

Although there is still snow in the high country here, Memorial Day is just around the corner and things are heating up. There are lots of Park City summer activities that are as enjoyable as the winter activities here. There is mountain biking, hiking; zipline, bobsled, alpine coaster, alpine slide, hot-air balloon and horseback riding. There are reservoir lakes just down the road for fishing, kite boarding, jet-skiing and sailing. There are also blue-ribbon streams for phenomenal fly fishing and plenty of public golf courses tucked away in the beautiful mountains. Downtown is open just like winter with often discounts at the local restaurants. You can visit the many art galleries, shops, historic Park City visitor center and Utah Olympic Park. Weekly events include the Park City Farmer’s Market and Park City Silly Market. There are outdoor free and ticketed concerts at the resorts, art festivals, rodeos and more. Basically, there’s are lots of things to do here during the summer to keep you entertained or if you just want to chill and relax, our summer mountain scenery and pleasant, cooler temperatures will not disappoint.

Park City Summer Activities

You have access to all these activities and amenities all within an hour’s drive from the Salt Lake International Airport. All the conveniences that you can imagine are here in Park City, but if one day you want to leave the city behind, just drive another hour and you have access to the wilderness off the scenic Mirror Lake Highway in the Uinta Mountains of the Wasatch National Forest. Personally, I love being able to drive only a hour or so from home and be on a trail in the Uintas where I rarely see another person once away from the trailhead. The summer season is not long here so I try to take advantage of it while it lasts. In fact the Mirror Lake Highway typically does not open until June. But that’s okay. Last week I went up to where the road was closed, got my snowshoes out, head out into the forest and did not see a soul the entire time. Then when I had enough, head back to town for an amazing dinner at one of the local restaurants. I really hope not too many of you discover our secret here in Park City.

Park City Summer Vacation

Here is one couple’s recorded adventures while taking a Park City summer vacation which included a ride on the Park City Mountain Resort zipline and alpine slide, rock climbing in the nearby Uinta Mountains and fly fishing the Provo River. What is also nice about coming in the summer is that the Park City condo rentals are much cheaper than peak winter, ski-season rates. So you can get a pretty nice place in the summer with all the conveniences of home that may be otherwise out of reach during the winter season. What’s funny when I first watched this video is the two of them in a ceramic/wheel-throwing class that I wasn’t even aware was available. Like I said, you won’t get bored here or run out of things to do.

The new Montage Deer valley lodging extravaganza has finally opened. This luxury accommodation complex with 154 deluxe guestrooms, and more than 66 suites and private residences is located mid-mountain with ski-in, ski-out access, of course. There are three high-speed lifts just outside the Montage to get you out on the slopes in no time at all.

The Guestrooms are the “lowest” priced option and average 600 square feet in size. The suites are a little more spacious at 1,000 square feet to 3,200 square feet. Most rooms have either a private balcony or patio and rooms are accompanied by lavish stone bathrooms with deep soaking tubs. For an even higher end rental, you can choose a Montage Residence which are all located on the upper floors of the resort. You can choose a home with up to four bedrooms which range in size from 1,200 to 6,800 square feet. The Montage Residences feature high ceilings, private balconies, gas fireplaces, gourmet kitchens and luxurious five fixture stone master bathrooms. You have your choice of either a view of the Wasatch Mountains or dramatic views of the valley below.

Montage is on call for you day or night, 24 hour service. Besides the world class skiing at a #1 rated Ski Resort, there are plenty of other activities to enjoy such as snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and tubing to ice-skating, snowmobiling and dog sledding. Park City Discount Lift Tickets Only $33 Full Day!

Park City Mountain Resort has a limited amount of discount lift tickets for sale every season. Their $33 “Park City Screamin’ Deal” is an unbelievable deal for a full day lift ticket up until December 10th. From December 11th-17th the tickets are priced at $46 and the remainder of the month are $73. Considering a regular full day lift ticket will be somewhere around $90 (official price has not been released yet, TBA), these discount prices are pretty sweet. Now do note that the entire resort and all 114 trails will, most likely, not be open in late November, early December. But it all depends on mother nature. Just look at the dumping we had last December 14th – a champagne powder day that you would not have been disappointed with, especially not at a discount lift ticket price!

Liftopia is not the only place to get discounted tickets, but so far we have not seen anyplace else for the $33 deal. There are other sources you can find listed at our other page, Park City Discount Lift Tickets, such as at Salt Lake and Park City ski shops or from the resorts themselves like “3 out of 7″ day deals but they are usually more in the realm of a 10-20% discount rather than a 40% discount like the Screamin’ Deal at $33 or even $46. As I write this post, there is already days that have sold out of the $33 and $46 days, with a limited number posted on others like, only “11 left” at that price. So go ahead and take a look at the days that still have tickets left and perhaps grab a ticket or two for you and a friend, family member or just treat yourself! It’s time to grab those skis and boards out of storage, get them tuned and waxed to be ready for those soon to come powder days just around the corner. The Canyons Resort Season Pass Discounts Ends October 15th

The Canyons Resort season pass discounts ends October 15th, this Friday, so hurry and purchase and save some cash. New improvements for this season at The Canyons include 300 new acres of terrain, a “Ski-Beach” with firepits, lounge chairs and outdoor food stations, heated lift seats with an overhead bubble cover for weather protection and many other improvements to the mountain base area, terrain and lodging.

This season The Canyons Ski Resort is offering passes with varying degrees of benefits and which is reflected in the price. The basic pass is called the Silver Pass and the upgrade is the Gold Pass. There is also a Canyon Club platinum level membership. The price for the Silver Adult Full Season Pass is $999 until October 15th, $1,299 after the 15th. In comparison, the Gold Adult Full Season Pass is $1,399 until October 15th and $1,699 after the 15th. So you will save $300 if you make your season pass purchase now. There are also discounts for purchasing up until October 15th for most of their other passes, including the 5 and 10-day coupon books.

So what is the difference between the Silver and Gold passes besides the $400 price difference? There is a Canyons Silver vs Gold Season Pass Comparison Table that shows exactly what you get with each level. With the Gold pass compared to the Silver Pass, you get 1 more day lift ticket for friends or family, 2 more complimentary lodging nights, 2 more adult ski or snowboard lessons, 1 more gold level ski or board tune and two lunch entrees at The Cabin vs one appetizer or desert (for Silver Pass holders). Both Silver and Gold Passes include Up To 4 Buddy Passes Per Day For $59 Each, 15% Discount at Canyon Mountain Sports & One Sweet Ride, 15% Discount on Ski & Snowboard Rentals, Unlimited Hot Chocolate, Coffee or Tea, Weekly Winter Mountain Tour and Summer Lift Privileges. So head on over to The Canyons Resort Season Passes before the savings end on October 15th. The Park City Mountain Resort also has a similar pass offering with different levels of benefits. Their season pass prices will be going up after October 31st. The Deer Valley Ski Resort also offers discounts for ski passes prior to October 31st as well.

The 6th Annual Park City Food and Wine Classic will take place this Thursday July 8th through Sunday July 11th. Park City Utah Spring Skiing

What about Park City Utah spring skiing? One of the best times to plans your vacation and often some of the best skiing of the season. We have several storms during the month of April, dumping several feet of fresh powder on the slopes. Sure, down near the base of the resort the snow gets that familiar “mashed potato” type of texture during the afternoon warm-ups, but mid-mountain and up, the snow is still awesome after a storm, light and fresh Utah powder.

During the month of April, the slopes are a little less crowded, with the exception perhaps of Easter weekend. The temperatures are a little warmer so you do not need too many layers as in the colder months which makes things a little more comfortable. People enjoy eating their lunch outside at Red Pine Lodge at the picnic tables as if the snow was sand and you were having a day at the beach – yes, sometimes it even feels that warm but it is very comfortable at that altitude with low humidity and thin, dry air.

There are also usually discount package deals from most of the Park city hotels and resorts during the spring months. You may be able to save half off the regular high season prices during December, January and holiday periods. Note that typically, Deer Valley Resort closes up to one week earlier than The Canyons Ski Resort and Park City Mountain Resort. It’s just how Deer Valley rolls. If your stay is long enough, it is also a good time to visit Utah National Parks. Within in a half day drive from Park City, you can be at Arches, Canyonlands and Capitol Reef National Parks, among others. These parks become crowded during the summer months and can have extremely high temperatures during the day, but during the spring, crowds are low and temperatures are pleasant.

So if you are debating what time of the skiing season to plan your vacation, do not discount the month of April. Now, we cannot make guarantees that April will offer you the best skiing of the season, but more often than not, it is not the worst time of the season for sure. I overheard someone on an airplane once talking to a couple of guys that were going to Utah to do some skiing in December. He said he went to Utah in November/December and the skiing was not so great. Not too surprised. Unless we get some huge snowstorms in November, the skiing can never compare to what it is like from January through April. They do some snowmaking at the resorts, but the machines can never cover all the terrain, especially not off trail, so advanced skiers especially will not be too impressed with the skiing conditions sometimes early in the season.

Next it is time to focus on Park City Summer Activities since the ski season is officially over here in Park City. Would you believe that Snowbird here in Utah, sometimes has stayed opened during the weekends throughout the month of May and sometimes into June?! They sometimes get a ton of snow too during the spring snowstorms. Anyway, there is plenty of things to do in Park City during the summer months so come on out and plan your summer fun mountain vacation!

The Canyons Ski Resort Spring Break and Spring Gruv

The Canyons Ski Resort spring break annual Gruv festival will be coming up soon, taking place March 26th through April 4th. For those ten days there will be lots of free events like concerts in the Resort Village and plenty of fun contests like the infamous Pond Skimming Contest as well as the Canis Lupis Challenge and 1976 Red Bull Games. Great way to spend your spring break or any vacation.

Canyons Pond Skimming Contest

The Pond Skimming Contest is The Canyons’ most popular party and is the true indicator that spring has arrived. Contestants must dress in costume (the funkier the better) as they attempt to cross a 100-foot pond on skis or a snowboard. The pond and the excitement happen at mid-mountain just outside Red Pine Lodge. Must be 10 years of age or older to enter.

Schedule:
8:00am – 9:00am: Registration at Smokie’s
11:45am: Riders’ meeting at top of course (mandatory)
12:00pm: Contest start
12:00pm – 3:00pm: DJ Velvet spins tunes at the Pond
2:30pm: Awards Ceremony at the Pond

Canis Lupus Challenge

In the old days, it was called The Natural (natural halfpipe) and the James Bond trail (for resembling a banked bobsled run). Call it what you will. Canis Lupus is a 1/4 mile-long gulley that serves up banked walls, turn after turn and whoops that will throw you off track if you are not prepared. There will be a few banked slalom gates at the top, then a “not-so-straight shot to the finish.” Must be 10 years of age or older to enter.

Red Bull 1976 Games

The Canyons will be hosting a qualifying event for the Red Bull 1976 Games. Teams of four will compete for the glory and bragging rights of becoming the 1976 Games Champions. Competitions include Snowbladecross & Old School Air – all up at Red Pine Lodge area. Registration info to come…
